Robyn brings Swedish Sweetness to Toronto

I have a love affair with Sweden.  It started some time ago, and has grown somewhat out of control (I can now never go to Sweden, just in case it doesn't live up to my expectations).

Many months ago I wrote a post about my favourite Swedish things, but now I have a new one to add to the list.  Her name is Robyn.  I discovered her in a recent issue of Wired Magazine (they call her the Anti-Britney Spears).  She works closely with The Knife, one of my fave (Swedish) bands.

After some easy digging online, I found out Robyn is on a North American tour.  Better yet, she is coming to Toronto May 5th (and, better, better yet, I am actually in the city that day - just have to find out if there are still tix!).  Here's a video for you to enjoy, with typical Swedish flair.  xo

Hi Amber, Hope you are able to get tickets to see Robyn in concert, maybe you could Jenna with you as a small bribe for her to keep the fridge in your studio as full as your one at home. Was watching some more of Robyn's videos on YouTube and really liked 'Be Mine!' - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PDNRTCuPyQ - Going by the Phoenix Concert Theatre's website, Mel C from the spice girls is doing a concert there on May 8th, she's not that great as part of the Spice Girls by she's pretty good solo. Hope you are able to get more than a 240 calories, half bar of extra dark Scharffen Berger chocolate for your dinner tonight? You do know that if you blogged and twittered less you would get your work done quicker? but then you wouldn't be AmberMac so please keep working late and posing more great videos, just ask Jenna nicely to cook you a proper dinner when you get home. Oh and don't forget to buy your tickets to see Robyn. I'm off to find me some chocolate. L&L

I used to watch Robyn on YTV way back when Tarzan Dan was on The Hit List. And when I was of an age at which it was socially acceptable to watch YTV. It's good to know she's still putting out music!

Her song "Show Me Love" is permanently in my iTunes "Top 100 most listened" playlist. Reading about her on Wikipedia she certainly seems to have her head screwed on. Not so sure about the side shaved hair though... ;)

Hi Amber- Robyn wasn't always the anti-britney, she was the pre-cursor. Actually it was her producer that that got britney her start- a la hit me baby one more time. Don't your rember Robyn in her 90's incarnation of "show me love, show me life? Camman!

Here in Sweden we've had a deep crush on all the great Canadian bands for years now. Some time ago everything seemed to come from either Canada or Gothenburg.

It looks like Robyn is going to perform on the Late Show with David Letterman this Thursday, May 1.

I remember Robyn from the first time she appeared. I bought the CD single to Show Me Love. Amber, if you're needing more singing Swedes, check out the latest one, September aka Petra Marklund @ septembermusic.se

If, you're interested in sweden, you should have a look at Polarbear Podcast (http://www.polarbearpodcast.com/), it's a podcast all about life in sweden (in English). Leo said that "It's interesting that she sings in English" in net@nite 50. I would just like to say that making music in English is very usual in sweden. You'll notice when listening to the Polarbear :)

Haha Amber, it's funny how tastes differ. Work took me to Europe for a few weeks at the first of the year. While trying to adjust to the time difference I turned on a music channel in Amsterdam and saw a singer that I thought was awful, she was trying so hard to look different and failing miserably to make it work, and sang an awful song. I thought she was such a train wreck that I was enthralled and I watched for a full minute or so. Her name? Robyn!!!!!

Hey Amber. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I lived in Sweden for 3 years and let me tell you, as a Canadian, the experience was very disappointing. Sweden has the world fooled with it's reputation of peace, harmony and justice for all. Great to visit but as a foreigner if you plan to assimilate into Swedish society you better have blond hair and fair skin. This country is full of blatant racism among many other problems. They have have a need to drink in excess, are lazy, love their stress leave option, will do anything and everything to cheat the gov't, have very little if any balls to protest injustices, believe one should have not too much and just enough, yet bitch and moan about their country when they are on one of their drinking binges. Don't go, Amber you will be shocked that this society is cold, arrogant and sheltered from our beliefs in North America. So many dinner parties wasted due to Swedes complaining the need for North Americans desire to achieve above than average. YET, secretly they envy North Americans for our choices and ability to speak up. For all of you Swedes, speak up- grow some balls and fess up that Sweden is a tough country to crack and leaves so much left to be desired.
