Memories of Hercules on CBC's Spark

If you live in the US, chances are you've seen the PSAs about the upcoming switch to digital broadcasting (2009).  If you're in Canada, there's a good chance you don't know too much about the switch north of the border (since it happens in Canada a couple of years later).  If you want to get all the details about the analog-to-digital television transition, check out a recent radio column I did for CBC's Spark

And if you were also a childhood fan of Hercules (you'll have to listen to Spark for this to make sense), here are the lyrics to the theme song and some more info about the show.  Enjoy!

I absolutely remember watching this as a kid in the early 80's. I'm in Hamilton and I'm pretty sure it was on Global TV. I even as a kid in grade 1, made a ring like Herc's out of construction paper, and my friends and I would run around the school yard pretending to be Herc!! Wow, does this bring back memories.

Totally remember that series! I even remember that episode! What I didn't remember was that they were that short... guess they must have bunched a few of them together for one slot? I guess 5 minutes is about right for the attention span of that age group.

Not sure why I remember this, as I grew up in New Jersey, USA, but that was some flashback moment. Pretty cool - thanks for posting.

Ha, laughed my head off. I want my Sceptre of Medusa. Sheesh I rembered this episode. Crazy. This episode needed the requisite "Hey Herc, hey herc." from Newton. Helena -- also right up there with Betty Rubble... ;) Olym-pi-aaaaaaa!

What a blast! I LOVED this show. I think it was on at 8am ET on Global Toronto for several years. I can remember watching it before going to school. It would be great if Teletoon Retro brought it back! Thanks for posting that Amber and for mentioning it on the podcast.

Heh heh. We had our own X-rated version of Newton's warning dialog to Herc, Herc. It would be inappropriate to say it here, though.

Actually it is well known (at least in nova scotia) that analogue television will cease to exist in 2011... so a year before the end of the world... convenient. :)

Oh yeah... Hercules, Rocket Robin Hood, Thundercats and Spiderman... I think I'm going to make some kool-aid now. Ah the good ol' days...

I watched this every saturday as a kid before going shopping with mom and grandma. I remember the hyrda made the same noise as all the other large monsters.

No, no.... I got one! Hammy Hamster! And don't forget that "acid trippin'" version of Pinocchio in stop animation. Dude/Dudesses, I still get freaked when I see "The Hilarious House of Frightenstein". That dancing large/bald guy still gives me the creeps.

Holy blast from the past - that was awesome. I remember we had alternate words to the theme - too crude for a blog comment :)
