Too much social media is bad for your health. This is true for adults and especially true for kids.

Almost a decade ago I wrote a book exclusively on this topic (don't buy it, it's out of date!), endlessly worried about how tech companies saw young users (including my son) as a goldmine for data and dollars.

If we know there is poison in our pockets, AKA social media, are warning labels on social media apps a good first step to better awareness and education?

Warning: this post is about sexism and harassment in the media and tech industry, in public life, in the Internet space, in the work world, and beyond.

Generally speaking, I don't talk a lot about my early days in the tech industry and reporting on the tech industry. Why?

Well, I worked tirelessly around the clock for many years to gain respect as a tech reporter and thinker and speaker, but it was snatched away from me over and over again when ...

🔴 A boss suggested my next career step should be Playboy magazine
🔴 A speaking client recommended I pole dance if my keynote didn't go well
🔴 A "fan" became so obsessed I had to get the police involved and security personnel to walk me to and from my car for many months
🔴 A mentor crossed the line over & over again
🔴 An interview in a reputable magazine turned into pure objectification (see a few paragraphs from that article below in quotes and pictured above)

Now, most of this behaviour was back in 2004 - 2014, and maybe for a few years after. Then, there was a lovely period of time when things were much better, a rising sense of equality and civility.

Unfortunately, in 2024, I feel a growing movement - especially online - against women. Of course it's not a large majority, but it's a loud minority.

I'm not posting any of the stories above because I need or want anyone to feel badly about what I've gone through. I just hope everyone pays attention to what's happening now. Let's not go back in time...

Anyone who watches Toronto's CityTV International, where MacArthur produces and reports on Web happenings, might think MacArthur is just another pretty face hired to make online culture more mainstream. Sure, she's deadly cute especially when she talks excitedly about MacBooks, but she spends more time surfing YouTube then she does primping her hair. Her daily on-air reports for CityTV put her in the public sphere, even if she has to look more manicured than she'd like."

I knew when I had this conversation with @strongarm.ca about the opportunity gap that exists between women and men in leadership that the numbers were disheartening (but even I was surprised to see some of these stats below).

However, as we discuss above, we desperately need more women in leadership roles to better support innovation, inclusion, impact, etc.

🙋‍♀️Women CEOs make up only 5.3% of CEOs of TSX-listed companies - Osler (2022)

🙋‍♀️Women-led start-ups receive only 2.3% of global venture funding - Crunchbase (2020)

🙋‍♀️Women serve as the head of government in only 6.7% of UN countries -Pew (2023)

Also, women are paid roughly 22% less than men on average (and Black and Hispanic women experience the largest wage gaps). -Economic Policy Institute (2024)

Meta shares that this block includes "governments, elections, or social topics that affect a large group of people and / or society at large" (otherwise known as the only reason many of us are on social media - also, how do they decide? Will women's healthcare issues be limited because this is a social topic or will climate conversations be limited because they affect society at large 🤦‍♀️).

In IG, you'll find this setting under Settings & Activity > Suggested Content > Don't limit.
